For our inaugural edition, we invite current community college students, undergraduates and recent graduates (within the last 2 years) to submit poetry, prose, photos, and art that address illness, well-being and caring for those who are ill in relation to the following themes:

Instructions to Authors


For submissions, email the following to MedicineAndTheNarrative@gmail.com 

1. A PDF of your work with the highest possible resolution and preferred ratios that fits either on the provided submission template or within the dimensions of submission (see below for template)

2. Signed copy of the submission form 

3. Photocopy of your current or previously issued student ID (no older than 12/1/2022) 

4. Optional  (maximum 400 words) description of your work, creative process and/or its inspiration. 

 

All completed submissions received by March 1st, 2024, will be reviewed by a panel that includes students, creatives, and care providers. 

 

Accepted works will be published with the work’s submitted title and creatives’ first and last name. If submitted, a description of the work may also be included.  

We expect to accept a maximum of 100 different works and anticipate a finished physical edition of the full literary magazine within a year of selection. 

If your work is accepted, you will receive an email notification within 3 months of the submission. 

Must be 18 years or older to apply. All applicants must also be currently enrolled or recently graduated (<2 years) from a community college or four year degree granting institution to submit work. 


Dimensions & Template

Authors have the following two options for formatting their work.

  1. Submissions cam be uploaded as a 8.5in x 11in image file, preferably PNG.

    (If choosing to submit with option “1”, please make sure to leave 0.25in margins of space around anything you don’t want cut off during the printing process. )

    (To avoid white borders around your work, please make sure your nonessential work extends to at least 0.13in away from the edges)

  2. Authors can download the submission template, and format their work within the guidelines provided.
